The process of creating a scale model of an assembly or a physical part can be quicker and more accurate with rapid prototyping. The technique uses three-dimensional CAD (computer aided design) data and the results are constructed or produced using a 3D printer or a technology known as ‘additive layer manufacturing’. While it is a widely acceptable and commonly conducted procedure for fabricating scale models, there are certain safety precautions you should consider for your own safety and to ensure a high-quality product. Here are five safety tips for when you have to use rapid prototyping for your project:
- Learn to use the equipment – Read and study the manual, or better yet, get yourself trained by a professional. That way, you can confidently operate the equipment and be able to design your scale models properly.
- Wear proper apparel – Wear safety glasses, closed shoes, and clothes that fit well. Avoid wearing jewelry and other loose items like watches and neckties. Tie your hair if it is long, and wear an appropriate protective cap to keep your hair strands from falling into the machine or the sample being crafted.
- Make sure the machine is in proper working condition – Make sure that there are no loose items, rags, and other foreign objects in and around the machine, and be certain that it is plugged into the right electrical socket. Moreover, be sure not to leave the machine unattended.
- Save money by outsourcing the job – You can cut your costs in rapid prototyping by letting a specialist do it for you. This can be practical if you want to mass produce certain parts at a minimal cost.
- Outsourcing? Make sure you are hiring an established and reputable company – If you do not have your own rapid prototyping equipment, you can outsource the job to specialty tooling and molding manufacturing company in China. However, make sure that the company has at least 10 years of experience and that they are proven for their high standards and high-quality results.
